Reading Reflection No. 2
- Then general theme of the book was finding success in the numerous failures that happen in life.
- In my opinion, this book coincided a lot with the discussion of tenacity in this class. In one chapter titled "Passion is Bullshit," Adams discusses the controversy of passion being the key to success as most people think it is. He elaborated on how with each failure and success of his different ventures, his level of passion changed every time. I think this goes hand in hand with tenacity. If you are starting a project or business, your levels of motivation and passion are bound to fluctuate, and you need to be tenacious enough to work through them and see past it.
- If I had to design an exercise based on this book, it would involve students coming up with a business idea based on something they hate. In one chapter, Adams says a former boss of his stated that people who start businesses because they are passionate about the subject of business (a baseball fan starting a baseball company) are some of the worst people to loan to because they're in the business "for the wrong reason." Instead, as his boss said, it is better to go with someone who has no personal connection to the business idea because those people are starting it for the work process and journey itself. I thought this story was really interesting so I think it would be cool for people to come up with a business idea based on things they really don't have any interest in.
- Something I have never thought about that I found in this book was the concept of timing and luck. I've always thought luck is just something that happened and doesn't have much to do with what people put into it. At one point in the book though, Adams talks about how luck has played a role in his life and he says, "It wasn't a complete accident that luck found me; I put myself in a position where luck was more likely to happen." This made me realize that you can control your situations even more than you think.
Hey Olivia,
ReplyDeleteI think you did a really great job on your reflection post. I think you did a fantastic job going into detail about the book. Furthermore, I think your class exercise based on the book was interesting. I think that the author of the book makes some valid points about people that have a direct passion about what they do, then they may be in the business for the wrong reasons. However, I do disagree with the author, but this would certainly be an interesting class exercise. Great job!
Hey Olivia,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your reflection post. I thought some of the points you made about passion not being the most important factors to your success was very interesting. I've thought about it before, as like the example with the baseball fan, their emotional attachments to the business idea blinds them to the reality of the condition of the market, how much they can make, their competitors ect. Overall though, awesome job on the post.
