Celebrating Failure

Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
  • So this semester, I am taking the lovely class that is Financial Accounting. For some reason I decided to take it at UF instead of another state university like UCF where it would be considerably easier. All of last year, all older business majors told me that it was a difficult class so I kind of knew what I was in for, and they all told me to get Study Edge for it. I decided for the first exam that I didn't need Study Edge and that my study abilities would be fine, so I basically ignored all the advice that I was given. I mostly did this because I am an independent person who likes to prove that I am capable of doing things on my own, which can be a flaw such as in this case. Anyway, I thought I studied well for the first exam but when I got my grade back it was a 65%, so obviously not great.
Tell us what you learned from it.
  • By almost failing that exam, I learned that I won't always be able to do things on my own and that change can be good. I decided to get Study Edge for the second exam and changed some of my study habits and I ended up getting a 90% on the second exam, which is undoubtedly a large improvement.
Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were just a few months ago?
  • I think that failure is a necessary part of life. It can be difficult to experience and accept, but I think that we learn the most from failure. You realize what works, what doesn't, and how you can improve yourself. Personally, when I am facing failure, I try to figure out what caused things to go wrong, and identify what changes I can make to improve on the situation. This class has shown me that risk and failure are necessary for growth. In both the entrepreneurial context and just in life, risk and failure can be the factors that affect our success and development. I would say that I am likely to take more risks now that I know how much failure can help us.

  1. Hey Olivia,

I think you did an excellent job on your posting for this assignment. I can completely relate to your experience about failure. I was taking anatomy this semester, when I could have taken it at a school where it would have been much easier. I also needed to take financial accounting for the entrepreneurship minor so I ended up taking it at my local community college. The class was considerably easier than it would have been if I had taken it at UF. Great job on the post!
