Bug List
- When I'm taking notes by hand during a class lecture, my pen runs out of ink and I have to spend time digging through my backpack to find another pen.
Why it exists: I don't always monitor how low on ink my pens are, so I often get caught off guard when they actually do run out. - The line out the door at Tijuana Flats on University Ave. on Tuesdays.
Why it exists: Tijuana Flats holds "Tijuana Tuesdays" where you can get two tacos for around five dollars. Lots of people take advantage of this deal and a line ends up forming out the door because of how many people want to get tacos at a cheaper price than normal. - People giving cashiers money completely folded up, crumpled, or just thrown on the counter.
Why it exists: People are often in a hurry while making purchases and grab whatever cash they have on hand, whether it is folded up in a wad or crumpled in the bottom of their purse. They don't realize that handing their cash over in a nice, unfolded, stack actually makes the transaction go faster than hurriedly handing it over while it's unorganized. - Going to Marston on the first day of classes and having the internet go out every 10 minutes.
Why it exists: There are tons of people on campus on the first day of classes and nearly all of them are connected to UF wifi, whether it is on their phone, tablet, or computer. All of these connections may slow down the wifi or make it go out every so often. - The lack of parking near Florida Gym and University Ave.
Why it exists: Florida Gym is near the stadium, student recreation center, and health center which means there is less space to put parking because of all the buildings in this area, along with the fact that they are very high-traffic pedestrian areas. - The dishes that are left out on the counter days after they've been cleaned.
Why it exists: Some people think that the dishes will put themselves away or that someone else will do it for them after seeing them sit out for so long. - Misplaced items in stores.
Why it exists: A lot of times, it's more convenient for customers to put items down in the wrong departments and shelves while they are shopping instead of returning them back where they belong. Employees then have to go around and find misplaced items. - People who leave empty boxes and bags in the pantry.
Why it exists: Sometimes, people are too lazy to get rid of the boxes or bags. Or perhaps there is no room in the trash can and they don't want to take the trash out. - When cars don't use their turn signals.
Why it exists: Drivers might not think it's necessary to use their turn signals if there aren't many cars behind them, but it is still inconsiderate to other cars that are turning out of the street that the first car is turning on to. - People who don't cover their faces when they sneeze or cough.
Why it exists: People might not be aware of how easily germs can spread in those situations, or they're just not considerate to the people around them. - Someone who eats food off of people's plates without asking.
Why it exists: I'm someone who is a bit possessive of my food, but others are not. Sometimes they think that you are obligated to let them have some of your food without asking because they're friends with you. - Paying for shipping when I order things online.
Why it exists: Companies have to pay to ship things out to customers, and they either cover that cost by offering free shipping on higher priced items, or having the customer pay for the shipping costs. - When people leave lights on in rooms that aren't being used.
Why it exists: It's not always everyone's first thought to turn off lights all the time, especially if they're not very conscious of saving energy. Turning off lights that often is essentially a formed habit that not all people are willing to create because they don't see the full value of turning lights off when they leave the room. - Having to use wide-ruled notebook paper instead of college-ruled.
Why it exists: If I'm out of paper, sometimes the only thing available is wide-ruled paper, which is used more for younger ages so that they have more room on each line to write. - Recently waxed basketball/volleyball courts that make it hard to dive on.
Why it exists: Wooden gym floors have to be resurfaced and waxed about every year to withstand wear and tear from regular use. As a volleyball player, the newly resurfaced floors have too much traction and make it very difficult and painful to dive for a ball if needed. - Watching online lectures that are longer than an hour and a half.
Why it exists: Certain courses have more material than others and need to have longer lectures to convey that information. Sometimes I can't stay focused for that long, so it becomes difficult to actively watch the lectures for that extended period of time. - Drivers that drive extremely slow in the left lane.
Why it exists: Some people don't know that the left lane is typically used for faster drivers and passing other cars. - People who talk during class lectures.
Why it exists: Perhaps these people don't value the class time as much as others or are just inconsiderate to the lecturer and students who came to actually pay attention during the lecture. - Tourists who walk really slow at theme parks.
Why it exists: Tourists are just visiting the parks and have probably never been there, so they take their time strolling through the entire thing, unaware of people behind them who may be trying to move a little faster. - All of the snacks and convenient items near the cash registers at stores.
Why it exists: Stores know that people are bound to look around at things while waiting in line, and are likely to grab things that are convenient. With these items up front near the registers, they can make more sales.
Reflection: At first, I thought that writing this bug list would be pretty easy and simple. However, once I got past my 6th bug, I realized how difficult it was to continue to come up with things that genuinely annoyed me. It took me a few days to complete all 20 items, and I tried to pay more attention to things I did on a daily basis to try and find these other bugs. A lot of them I didn't even realize until I expressed to other people how they bothered me. Trying to distinguish "why" these all existed really helped me to view my daily activities from a different perspective. I had never given much thought to why these things annoyed me, much less why they occurred in the first place. Overall, I think this assignment has helped change the way I view problems I run into as well as my daily activities in general.
Hello Oliva!
ReplyDeleteI found your post to be refreshing to read another person’s perspective on issues around Gainesville and UF. Certain “bugs” that you wrote are ones I have noticed but didn’t write in my own bug post, and I agree with several. One bug that annoys me is the WIFI issue you spoke of during the first week of school, I think a lot of people do not keep their software up to date during the long summer break and when they come to school the UF WIFI has many requirements to allow access. I think a lot of the WIFI initially is used trying to download software or even applications for new classes. Yet, I am sure there are other aspects that both of us have not thought of for the “why”.
Hey Oliva,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading through your bug post, especially those that related to UF and Gainesville related problems. Bug number 9 about turning signals is something that really frustrates me too, I have a similar bug listed on my post. I also found bug number 11 about stealing food off someone plate relatable, as my twin brother does that to me all the time! You'll find i also have a similar post about tourists in theme parks on my post, that i think you'll find amusing. Check it out if you have a chance!
Hey Olivia!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your Bug List! I thought it was very interesting and I really like the points you made. Your points are things we encounter in our day to day lives and when I was coming up with my list I didn't think of these and they are great. I can personally relate to the one where people don't use their turning signals, it is really frustrating. Also the point you made about when Marston is packed, I was here during summer and I loved it just because no one was here and I had so much space. Good job!
Hey Olivia!
ReplyDeleteI thought some of your bugs were really relatable and well thought-out. Number 8 stood out to me because I always get frustrated when people do that and when I am back at home my sister does it all the time! Then I go to get food and it's just an empty box! I also really could relate to number 16 as most of my classes are online so I often have to watch online lectures. It is frustrating when they are too long because I lose focus. I would rather watch it in 2 parts because I will retain more information if I am actually focused!
Hi Olivia! Your bug list is very well thought out and explained. Many of these I would never have thought of right off the bat. However, tourists who walk slow in theme parks might be one of the most annoying things ever. Especially if it is really hot and crowded that day! Also, super long online lectures. It is hard enough to pay attention closely during an online lecture; but my motivation gets very low when they are super long lectures. Great post!!
ReplyDeleteHey Olivia! I really enjoyed reading through your bug list. I think you described your 20 "bugs" in detail and did a good job explaining why they exist. We have some similar bugs as well! The one on your list that drives me crazy is people that drive slowly in the left lane. That specific bug might be my least favorite thing in the entire world. I agree with a lot of your other examples too, but didn't have them on my list. For example, running out of ink during a lecture stresses me out because then I miss part of the lecture. Overall, great post!
ReplyDeleteHey Olivia,
ReplyDeleteThis bug list was really interesting and funny. I could relate to a lot of the bugs you posted about, and it brings out the idea that if a lot of people have had these same bugs, why haven't we fixed them yet? Anyways, I could also relate to the difficulty of coming up with these bugs, it sounds simple, but when you try and look at the bug in the third person point of view on why it exists, it can get very confusing. All in all it was great work!
